Micke H Postat 25 februari 2009 Postat 25 februari 2009 Facebook is the first part of the realization of the Internet's actual connective potential to change the context of human culture. Within 10 years the way we interact will be unrecognizeable to someone from 1990, and I'm not just talking about having conversations online rather than hearing their voices. I'm talking about the sheer convenience of getting in contact and having friendly conversations with not only the people you know and hang out with regularly, but people you haven't seen in years and would never think to call except he's one of the 30 people online right now who you're friends with. Everyone will be far more aware of the people they claim to know than we have since the creation of the city. The other part that's especially important is that these sites level the playing field. Up until a year or two ago, celebrities lived in a totally different world, and any attempts to get a look at that world only came through gossip journalists and paparazzi who only served to further separate The Important Ones from the rest of us. Now I can go on Twitter and see that Wil Wheaton is further behind on Battlestar Galactica than I am, or that Felicia Day has been stuck in traffic for 5 hours and is singing The Killers at the top of her lungs. Or that after a long debate, Dr. Drew Pinsky and Rainn Wilson have agreed that mermaids probably have cloacas. Suddenly you realize that these people are entirely human and that their thoughts and hassles are 100% as banal and pointless as your own, and not through magazines trying to "humanize" them but through just reading about their thoughts. So when you ask what use Facebook is, you're really asking from the perspective of the pre-facebook human culture, because the answer to that is integral to what the new culture is all about.
