De absolut flesta mikrofoner har ett upptagningsmönster som kallas njure. En del, oftast stormembrans kondensatormikrofoner har valmöjligheter mellan ett antal olika val. Om du har en sådan mikrofon så kan du göra stora tonmässiga väl redan vid mikrofonen, innan den ens kommer så långt som till din mikrofonförstärkare. (In English at the bottom of the page).

Förutom att påverka hur brett område mikrofonen tar upp i den riktning du pekar den så får det också stor påverkan på frekvensåtergivning. Särskilt om mikrofonen är nära ljudkällan. Shape your sound with polar patterns

Most microphones have one pickup pattern called cardioid. Some of them, often large diaphragm condensers, have the possibility to switch between some different choices. If you have one of those microphones you ca make big tonal changes already att the microphone, before it even hits the preamp.

Aside from affecting how wide of a field the microphone captures in it’s direction it also affects the frequency response. Especially if the microphone is close to it’s sound source.
